In 1948 a feat of aviation logistics took shape in Western Europe. Divided by the Iron Curtain the Soviet Union hoped to take Berlin for itself by enforcing a blockade of vital supplies to the residents of West Berlin. Cutting off all road and rail transportation links to the city, there was only one way to get supplies in – by air. As part of a community event here at msFlights.net we are paying homage to this feat with a group flight, and a small competition.
The team from simmershome.de have graciously allowed us to host and use their Retro Templehof for these events.
There are two separate events organized for this, the group flight on June 25th at 2100EDT and a VA tonnage contest which runs from June 1st to June 21st.
Group Flight
We will be departing from two hubs of the airlift, one in the British Sector and one in the American Sector. We will arrive together at Berlin Templehof before a final trip outbound together to another hub at Wunstorf. This will be taking place in SimLink.
It is requested that you only fly from aircraft that participated in the airlift, and depart from the appropriate sector.

VA Tonnage Contest
There was definitely friendly rivalry between units that operated as part of the airlift about the tonnage delivered, so to recreate that we have set up in partnership with msFlights.net Virtual Airline a competition! There are two teams, The Commonwealth (UK, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa) and The Americans. Choose your team, but choose wisely. Each team has a historically accurate flightpath to take (there were three air-corridors in use) and your selection of aircraft is limited to those that took part in the actual airlift. The Commonwealth route is shorter, but their aircraft have a smaller capacity. The USAF has further to travel but gets more there each run. This is a team exercise, it is about which team delivers the most, and remember it is for the people! PLN files have been created for each of the legs plus one for the round-trip for each team.
Rules:
- Flights will be accepted between June 1st 2016 0000Z and June 21st 2359Z (PIREP Filed timestamp)
- PIREPS are submitted via the msFlights.net VA kaCARS software
- Once your first flight has been logged you have chosen your team and any PIREPS submitted after that MUST be for that team. If you fly for the other team that PIREP will NOT be counted towards the team totals
- Only aircraft in your teams list can be flown
- Each flight must consist of two legs (PIREPS), inbound and outbound. Failure to complete the outbound leg before submission of the next inbound leg will result in loss of the cargo from your previous inbound leg
- Tonnage is only calculated on inbound legs, outbound are empty
- You may complete a maximum of 3 flights per 24-hour period (6 legs)
- Each leg has a VOR you must transit by, this is how you navigate the safe Air-Corridor into and out of East German airspace
- Landing rates must not exceed 500ft/min
- Have fun!
