On June 24 1948 the Soviets closed the East German borders and ceased the flow of essential supplies into West Berlin. Faced with what would now be described as a potential humanitarian disaster the war-weary Western Allied forces began what would prove to be a historic and record setting feat of aviation history - The Berlin Airlift.
I felt a tribute to this feat of aviation and logistical planning fitted perfectly in with SimLink, plus it gives rise to a small competition.
For this flight you will have a choice of starting airports.
If you wish to represent the Commonwealth nations that took part in the Airlift then your starting airport will be EDHL, use the Commonwealth PLN file. Your choices of aircraft are:
• Avro Tudor
• Avro Lincoln / Lancaster / Lancastrian
• Avro York
• Handley Page Hastings
• Vickers Viking
• Douglas C-47 / DC-3
If you wish to represent the USAF squadrons that took part in the airlift then your starting airport is ETAR, use the American PLN file. Your Choices of aircraft are:
• Boeing C-97 Stratofreighter
• Douglas C-54 Skymaster / DC-4
• Douglas C-74 Globemaster
• Lockheed Constellation
• Douglas C-47 / DC-3
The team over at simmershome.de have graciously allowed us to host their Retro Templehof scenery packages for use in this flight. Additionally there is scenery for the final destination of Wunstorf (ETNW). The scenery is available with the flightplans on my OneDrive.
We all know about inter-service rivalry so there is also a competition going in association with the msFlights.net VA. For more details about that head over to this thread!
