NOW I'm excited! Without the whole world to fly in I would be unlikely to switch off of FSX. :excitement:

It will be interesting to see how the add-on model works and which developers start working on it. Excited to hear more!

They'll have to pull something out of the hat with this one.
As I can't see myself buying a flightsim that does exactly the same as the flightsim I have, just because a few of my friends have bought it.
And then losing the ability to fly with people who haven't bought it.
            AGAIN....

"There have been generations missed, that would have loved flightsim"
            What about Xplane?

Let's hope they still use Simconnect or it'll be easy to add FSUIPC to it.
That way it could still be used on our Simlink network.
If you don't use BOINC or World Community Grid then you should!

Of course I'll buy DFS on opening day and probably the flight school also. Then I'll scratch build a bigger computer to run it sliders full right. Whether I'll like it or not will depend on how much Dovetail realizes that the hobbyist-developers, the freeware guys we all love, need to be permitted to hook into fancy features Dovetail may provide. I will also require some sort of multiplayer functionality. If Dovetail builds their 64 bit offering with the simmer's considerations first, it will surely succeed and make them enough money to keep them interested. If SDKs are limited in functionality (like FSX Steam's), then I fear I will shelf the software and continue my infatuation with P3D and FSX.

I also noted Mr. Jackson's statement as paraphrased by ROO, above. I reread it twice to make sure I was getting why he said what he said about missing a couple of generations of simmers because it wasn't easy (and Lord knows it is NOT easy). I too disagree with Paul's statement. Those simmers became computer nerds because that was what was required to pursue our passion. Such perseverance in making the sim(s) work is a main reason msFLIGHTS.net exists and is as vibrant and necessary as it appears to be.

              Here's hoping.
              Respects, Bob ...

                Hi again guys,

The following is the official Community announcement from Dovetail Games regarding the upcoming simulators.

DOVETAIL GAMES PRESENTS THE FLIGHT SIMULATORS OF THE FUTURE
Leading games publisher to launch two new flight simulation titles in 2016
After months of speculation we are very excited to finally be able to lift the lid on our plans for the future of flight simulation with the announcement of Dovetail Games Flight School. We understand that some of you may have not been expecting us to head in this direction, and so you probably have lots of questions about what is happening. We have therefore created this dedicated space for you to ask questions and for us to answer them.
The big questions are: What is happening with the announced Dovetail Games Flight Simulator (DFS)? Are Flight School and DFS the same? Will Flight School turn into DFS?
Firstly, Flight School is not DFS. Flight School is a standalone experience designed to teach players the basics of flight simulation in a fun, accessible way. Flight Simulator is still very much in active development, and upon release will be a much bigger and feature-rich simulator.
Why have we made Flight School? What is our intent for this new simulator?
We have spent the last two years listening to both existing and would-be simmers alike. We have been intent on discovering what keeps you all simming, and what stops those who would like to get into flight simulation from doing so. We learned that flight simulation appeals to an incredible amount of people, a lot of which find it too hard to get started with. It is our aim to reclaim those would-be simmers, but in order to do so, we need to present flight simulation in a way that doesn't initially overwhelm them. That is where Flight School comes in.
So you didn’t develop Flight School with existing simmers in mind, you may ask?
Flight School has been developed to give anyone who wants to give flight simming a try the chance to do so. While established simmers will likely already know what we are aiming to teach, it is a chance to get an early preview of some of the new technologies we have implemented which will be carried over to DFS. Of course if you fancy brushing up on your skills or putting them to the test, then Flight School has piloting tests and missions which will also do just that.
But enough about Flight School – here is what you can expect from DFS.
Dovetail Games Flight School and Dovetail Games Flight Simulator do share the same underlying technology. In 2014, we acquired the rights to develop and publish new flight simulators utilizing Microsoft’s genre-defining flight simulation technology. This means that both Flight School and Flight Simulator are based on an evolution of Flight Simulator X technology.
Our goal is to put flight simulation at the forefront of people’s minds once more and present the genre in a way that doesn't initially overwhelm new simmers. With Flight School, we have created a realistic representation of how pilots learn to fly. Flight Simulator builds upon the foundations of Flight School, however it will include more content, additional features, and will extend the technology even further… and that’s just the beginning!
DTG Flight Simulator is still very much in development and is planned to be more expansive and evolved than Flight School. We are committed to developing a cutting edge flight simulator which takes full advantage of modern PCs and can be continuously built upon. For starters, Dovetail Games Flight Simulator will be a 64-bit simulator using DirectX 11 and take full advantage of modern GPU and CPU performance.
We are in this for the long term and = intend to support and expand upon DFS for years to come. We aren’t just going to make a new simulator – we intend to build a new simulation platform which grows with you, our players, over time.
And finally, yes, Dovetail Games Flight Simulator will include a Free Flight mode which will allow you to explore and fly wherever you want in the world from the very start.
Right now the team is heads down working hard on developing the sim to its fullest potential, so we may go a little quiet for a while until we have more news to share. If you have any questions, please let us know in the comments below and we will do our best to answer as many of them as we can.
Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far, we consider ourselves to be very lucky to be part of such a passionate community of simmers.

In both cases I am expecting a world wide MS Flight'esque platform. Add-ons that are not compatible with anything FSX related, add-ons to be licensed exclusively through Dovetail, and SDK kits that hinder the production of freeware utilities such as Plan-G.

Between this and the direction of Windows 10 it makes one wonder if Macs and X-Plane aren't in our futures. Imaginine its 2020 & we're all using Xplane. Won't we be the odd ones calling ourselves MSFlights:worked_till_5am:.

I hope they have an SDK, even if it is for a small charge. I know everything in FSX wont be compatible, but I dont think it will be to difficult to for companies like A2A and PMDG to port stuff over. It will just take time in the coding dept.

I expect similar limited offering as Karl describes. See my post # 7 in this thread for my personal intentions re: DFS and the flight school (DFS:A is it called?). The intended exclusion of enthusiast-level participation by means of limited SDK has been demonstrated by Dovetail in the limitations placed on the compilers make available to enthusiasts in FSX Steam SDK. Such SDK limitations have been discussed on FSX Steam forum. Dovetail's limited replies on this subject are, to me, discouraging. I feel this enthusiast exclusion is integral and inherent in Dovetail's flight simulation development business model.

Novawing, counselor and confidant to some employees of Dovetail Games, has heard from me privately on these SDK and multiplayer-centric subjects. Dovetail Games will NOT hear of my feelings directly, at least when I presume to represent our community. My intended hesitance to speak up on these subjects in Dovetail FaceBook Q&A's (Feb 15th), Steam forums or direct correspondence is soley out of respect for the good works Nova does with Dovetail on behalf of flight simmers worldwide and also a lack of dispatch from our community to so represent such enthusiast open source desires.

A couple of years ago, with far less reason and motivation than now exists, I proposed to staff to officially declare that the "MS" in msFLIGHTS.net be deemed to represent Multiplayer Simulations (plural). That suggention died in comittee (actually died in apathy). Considering our current wide spread flight simulations endorsments and official support as well as those passtimes represented in our TeamSpeak Other Games channels, is it time to reconsider this idea? Should we modify the text in our official logo from its current "A Flight Simulation Community" to "A Multiplayer Simulations Community"?

I don't think that is really necessary for us to do that we are still primarily a flight sim community we don't see any group elite dangerous flights.
                          Just a thought.

An interesting point surfaced over the last few hours. This is taken from the official community thread on Steam: http://steamcommunity.com/app/314160...6890550990408/

                            Thanks and kind regards, Michael
There are currently no plans to include third party content in Flight School. That will really be a standalone experience focused on learning to fly. DTG Flight Simulator is a different story, we will absolutely be looking to work with third party developers just like we have been doing with FSX: Steam Edition.

also in the same thread dovetail announced they will not be updating fsx any more. Seems like they made there money from it and thats it.I feel disappointed in this and it seems although they will be working with thirdparty developers. They ignored the 7 questions regarding freeware developers that worries me. If i cannot produce freeware for the new sim and edit stuff locally ill stay with what i have and what works for me. Lets wait and see!
