  • New Project: Florida - Bahamas Regional Routes

The title says it all, what I am currently working on is a mix of SkyBahamas, Cape Air, and Silver Airways inspired regional based routes in/around both Florida and the Bahamas.

Q: Why this region and not "XXX" region?

A: I live in Florida, and I have been to the Bahamas, its absolutely beautiful to fly/boat in and around, while there may not be much terrain to focus on (if you want that challenge try my KJAC/Jackson Hole routes), but the scenery for regional flying is undeniably some of the best in the world. As for default its still pretty, but there are TONS of quality freeware and payware options to greatly enhance the visual fidelity of this region, to which if this goes according to plan I will include my personal findings on both freeware and payware to help enhance the flying in these regions. There is 1 challenge that SOME airports will provide even for some of the larger/medium regional liners, not only are some of the runways short but some of the smaller airports do not even have instrument guidance, so be sure to check your landing weights/performances as well as forecast weather conditions which can be dramatic in the Caribbean.

I will talk with Kalo and Ozflyer more about my idea, but I want to deviate from the "circuit" idea for this "project" and move to a point to point system that I believe would have been somewhat more beneficial and realistic to real airline operations. However given the early history with MSF Airways and how we calculated the bonuses it is well understood why the routes were created in the fashion they were.

My current list of airports that will be included for this project.....

    United States Airports
    KPNS (Pensacola Florida)
    KLTH (Tallahassee Florida)
    KJAX (Jacksonville Florida)
    KORD (Orlando Florida)
    KTPA (Tampa Florida)
KFMY (Fort Meyers Florida) <- yes I did skip over my hometown airport of KSRQ
KFLL (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood Florida) [Possible Hub]
    KMIA (Miami Florida) [Possible Hub]
    KEYW (Key West Florida)

    Bahamas Islands Airports
    MYNN (Nassau) [Possible Hub]
    MYBS (South Bimini)
MYGF (Grand Bahama) <--- I can already see all the My girlfriend jokes coming in from this ICAO designation
    MYAM (Marsh Harbor)
    MYEM (Governors Harbor)
    MYEF (Great Exuma)
    MYCB (New Bight)
    MYSM (San Salvador)
    MYER (Rock Sound)
    17
    MYNN (Lynden Pindling/Nassau International)
    5.88%
    1
    MYGF (Grand Bahama International)
    11.76%
    2
    KFLL (Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International)
    47.06%
    8
    KMIA (Miami International)
    35.29%
    6
    KEYW (Key West International)
    0.00%

    The poll is expired.

KPBI (Palm Beach International -- West Palm Beach)?
As I live somewhat in the middle between Fort Lauderdale and West Palm Beach, I frequently shop flights in to/out of either airport.

+1 for considering my go-to airport, KFLL, for a hub!
Consider, however, that the 2006 FSX data on KFLL is now significantly different from the real-world layout. They used to have two parallel runways -- one long/primary for carriers and one short for GA/turboprop -- and an intersecting/diagonal runway also used for GA/turboprop mostly. Now, they have significantly extended the short parallel so that they can run parallel runway air carrier operations all day long, and they closed the old diagonal/intersecting runway. Oh, and designators 9L/27R and 9R/27L are now 10L/26R and 10R/26L, but that's to be expected almost anywhere, anyway.
Take the time, a second to soar; for soon after, beckons a second more.

Sadly the issue with the new updates to KFLL have not been updated by either the freeware or payware communities. I have been asking on FSDT's (FS Dream Team) forums for a massive overhaul of KFLL as it is now technically a legacy product, they are considering it, no time frame or official acknowledgement of said project though. I have also asked on FS Developers forums if anyone would want to tackle that project, I usually just get people that tell me to do it myself (like I don't have anything else to do), however some have expressed some interest.

I could add in KPBI, and I am more leaning towards making MYNN the hub just because of its location but quite honestly I would rather have the VA community vote on the new hub based on the list available.

Would that not depend on how you run out the routes.
HUB should be where it gives you the best Route layout.

Any of those in the vote would be ideal, I just like giving the VA community some say in where they would like to see the Hub, everyone wins.

I know I don't do much VA flying, but I think Miami is very frame intensive for a Hub, I think KFLL would be much more fitting too.

KFLL-KDAL or KDFW is one of the most popular Southwest Airlines flight route. I think it would be nice to do one like this or at least add in KFLL. Make hops in between those two for some regional hops. I like the ideas popping up but yes we should definitely add more regional flights. Its nice to fly all over the U.S. and the world.

If it is any use to you I have created the whole of south florida , bimini the bahama banks , north andros all the way to Nassau and beyond to Eleuthera 2m/pix down to .05m/pixel they are huge files but they will go on a portable hard drive if anyone wants them free to use i am not a great believer in doing all the water masking but the scenery i am sure you will agree is way better than the stock stuff and i have also done the keys
the scenery can be seen in these 2 vids

Well the votes have been in and it looks like KFLL gets the vote, sorry for taking a while to get back, I have done work on the routes, its just my new job doing IT support for Jackson Hewitt Tax Service is a bit crazy recently due to all the people doing their taxes and systems having issues. I am looking forward to some downtime coming up and finishing these routes, so don't worry I have not forgotten.

With ORBX having OpenLC USA, I was wondering if anyone had anything on this, I have Ultimate Terrain and Ground Environment. Orbx OpenLC USA + FTX should have a pretty drastic change if it covers the Bahamas, which I am not sure it does, can anyone test this out, and screen shots are most certainly welcome.

                    Screenshots requested (aerial preferably):

KSRQ (Sarasota/Bradenton) & immediate area (I know this is not part of the new routes, but it will help me judge accuracy between GEX+UTX vs FTXG + OpenLC USA)

                    KFLL (Fort Lauderdale)& immediate area

                    MYBS (South Bimini)

                    MYCB (New Bight)

                    MYSM (San Salvador)

                    MYAM (Marsh Harbor)

There are specific reasons geographically that I have chosen these few as screenshot requests for owners of FTX Global with OpenLC USA, this will help me determine viability between stock FSX/P3D, GEX+UTX, and FTXG + OpenLC USA when using freeware airports to enhance the scenery for those whom wish to use it.

Thanks a ton Nova for doing this, those shots help out a lot, the real testing will be with the Bahamas sceneries as the airports I listed may conflict with 3rd party, this was an issue for GEX + UTX.
