  • Help identifying an aircraft...

Hey all, so my local airshow posted this years lineup, and I can't seem to figure out what one of their "mystery" aircraft here. Here is the hint.

"This act prefers to take-off and land over water and off of one of the smallest runways in the the world. The most famous celebrity naval aviator may have flown this in the sequel..."

So I'm thinking its carrier based, but that's about as far as I've got. So I thought I'd ask those who are much smarter than I am :wink-new:

I'm not very familiar with "famous celebrity naval aviators" and the term celebrity is so broadly used here I'm not sure if its referencing an actor or an actual pilot. Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Naval Aviator could be a reference to Top Gun, which surely can claim celebrity status for its protagonist. So what would Maverick fly in the sequel (which has been on-again/off-again, especially when director Tony Scott committed suicide, but may be on-again now). It is expected that the plot will include drones as the era of manned air combat comes to an end. But then, said "naval aviator" could not "have flown this," literally.

If "may have flown" can be taken loosely and my theory is right, then it's the X-47. I don't think that thing is doing the airshow circuit quite yet, though -- other than the cheap mock-up of one I saw at the last show in Melbourne, FL.

Otherwise, it's whatever other new-era carrier-based aircraft might exist outside the F-18 (since there's already one announced for the show, it seems). The F-35, even though not all of them prefer to take-off and land over water?
Take the time, a second to soar; for soon after, beckons a second more.

I think the F-35 actually seems likely. I had initially dismissed the idea of the F-35 (or it being related to Top Gun) because of the wording of the last sentence.

Then when you mentioned Top Gun 2 had been on-again/off-again I got to looking up some info on potential sequels, and found this.

Though I'm still not sure. Canada doesn't have any F-35's, and I can't find any information about a USAF F-35 demo team or tour. I also imagine it would be a pretty big draw, so I assume it would be announced with the rest of the lineup (unless they're still waiting for confirmation). It would be quite welcome though!

I would suspect it's the F-35. The F-35 A/B models are actively touring for static and limited aerial displays this airshow season. I'm not sure if they have announced a formal list for where they're going to be until the venue is confirmed as a selection by the USAF demonstration teams. I don't really know why this is the case.

So it turns out it was an F-18C... Yeah, not sure if they changed the act or what happened, but I don't understand how anyone was supposed to guess F-18 from that hint.

Disappointing... only in that it wasn't something rarer. Still, it's not a bad day when you get to see an F-18... as long as it's not hostile, that is.

Yep, just got back from watching the performers practice and the F-18's did not disappoint. Though, even cooler than that was the "Screamin' Sasquatch" Jet Waco. I have never seen or heard anything like that before. The way it flies is absolutely ridiculous.

Also finally got to see (and hear) a P-51D, and it was incredible. Such a distinct sound.
