  • GREAT 48! Grand tour of US states. Week #40: Colorado - CHEERLEADERS!

Who'd like to ferry the Denver Broncos cheerleaders over the Rocky Mountains?
Dove Valley - the Broncos HQ and practice facility - is right next to Centennial airport.

Aspen and Telluride are major ski resorts in winter, but host cultural events at other times.
This week Aspen is the venue for the Aspen Ideas Festival.

    Week 40: Colorado
    KAPA>KASE>KTEX>KFMN
    Not GPS Direct

    FLIGHT PLAN
    • None of the legs are direct. Please follow the flight plan.
    • Beware dangerous mountain terrain. It's important to follow the GPS routing.
Download the PLN flight plan file here.
Flight plan in tabular form, flight maps and airport diagrams here.

    CRUISE
    Speed: 200 knots
    Altitude: 15,000ft

    AIRCRAFT
Pressurized passenger props only. Turboprops recommended. Supercharged props also OK.
Must handle 8000 ft runway lengths at 9000 ft above sea level.
Default aircraft: The Beechcraft Kingair 350 will work.
I will fly the Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia (see below).

    RESTRICTIONS
    No jets.

    WHICH VERSION, CLASSIC OR STEAM?
We will be using Classic, not Steam. We will continue to use Classic in future weeks for the Great 48! until I can assure pilot security for the flight, at which point we'll include Steam in joint Classic/Steam flights, leaving no one behind!

    WEATHER
To be decided. While our final airport has full ILS, the two mountain airports only have LDAs/IGSs that are tricky to fly for non-instrument rated pilots. If real-world weather is too bad, I may call for something more gentle!
Update (departure - 3 hours): Karl has kindly set the server to fair weather because of forecast storms in the mountains. HOWEVER I will still try to fly real-world weather using Active Sky Next unless it gets too bad. You're free to choose!

    SCENERY
    Default OK.
Highly recommended: FSgenesis US landclass (inexpensive payware).
FTX Global 1.30 and Vector 1.20 good but optional (expensive payware).
Vector users please see recommendations here.

RECOMMENDED SCENERY ADDITIONS FOR FTX GLOBAL USERS
You can download the whole series of freeware FTX global airport packs here.
All four airports this week are OrbX airports!:eagerness:
Approaching Aspen in an EMB 120.

Beware: High mountains! Our flight tonight is across the Rocky Mountains. Here's a "mountain map". Colorado has more than 50 mountains that are over 14,000 ft high, the highest of which is Mount Elbert at 14,440 ft. That's around two-thirds of the fourteeners in the whole of the US, just in this one state. This map of Colorado shows the fourteeners (red triangles) and our route (magenta and yellow).

Reminder: Join us in your passenger prop at KAPA for our 9pm departure. Your passengers will be waiting (see above).
Trivia: What do the various elements in this montage have to do with our flight tonight? Answers and guesses during the flight itself please.
