  • GREAT 48! Grand tour of US states. Week #19: Mississippi - OPEN COCKPIT!

Don your goggles for a gentle ride through the Magnolia State countryside before arriving at the Memphis metropolis.

    Week 19: Mississippi
    KCRX>25M>3MS1>KOLV>TN43*>M01

    FLIGHT PLAN
    • *After leaving KOLV, we overfly KMEM and TN43 but do not land at either.
    • After passing TN43, we fly north along the Mississippi river to M01.
Download the PLN flight plan file here.
Flight plan in tabular form, flight maps and airport diagrams here.

    CRUISE
    Speed: 60 knots
    Altitude: 2,000 ft

    AIRCRAFT
Open cockpit aircraft, capable of steady 60 kt cruise at 2,000 ft.

    Recommended:
    • Storm's OneDrive:
      • Curtiss Jenny
      • Curtiss Reid Rambler
      • de Havilland Tiger Moth
      • Fokker Dr.I Triplane
    • Classic Wings: Corben Baby Ace.
    • Rikoooo: There are several in their Vintage Aircraft section.
    • Golden Age: Pitcairn autogiros & others (payware)(Warning: 680 packets.)
    • Default: AirCreation Trike Ultralight. (This is the only open cockpit default. It's normally banned from our server, but we'll un-ban just for this flight.)
    • Dodosim: Flettner Fl 282. (An open cockpit helicopter! This is an unfinished beta by Mark Adams of Dodosim. Get it free from Hovercontrol. Takes some getting used to, and the gauges may not work for you, but a lot of fun.)
    Not recommended:
    • Fairchild PT-19, 23, 26 (too nose up at 60 kts, even flaps down).
    • Boeing Monomail (too nose up at 60 kts).
    • DH-4 and WACO 10 (Storm's Mothball Hangar. Very poor frame rates).
    RESTRICTIONS
All aircraft must have open cockpits.
This does not mean flying with an open canopy!

    WHICH VERSION, CLASSIC OR STEAM?
We will be using Classic, not Steam. We will continue to use Classic in future weeks for the Great 48! until more critical add-ons are working, at which point we'll move to Steam.

    WEATHER
    Depends on weather forecast.
If good, we will use real world weather (e.g. FSrealWX lite, Active Sky Next).
If bad, we will use preset server weather.

    SCENERY
    Default OK.
Highly recommended: FSgenesis US landclass (inexpensive payware).
FTX Global 1.30 and Vector 1.20 good but optional (expensive payware).
Vector users please see recommendations here.

RECOMMENDED SCENERY ADDITIONS FOR FTX GLOBAL USERS
You can download the whole series of freeware FTX global airport packs here.
NA packs relevant for this flight:
    • NA pack 17 (third stop KOLV)
    • NA pack 15 (last stop M01)

With so many suitable, beautiful, fun, and satisfying aircraft available, most of which are free, why bother? :eagerness:

Reminder! Bring your goggles, scarf, and open cockpit aircraft to KCRX for 9pm EST departure.

Trivia: What can I say? Nothing really, except this very obvious picture. Answers and guesses during our flight tonight.

I definitely had fun with this flight as always. Here are a few screenshots:

Had a bit of a wing-strike on landing. Tried to get out of it and ended up on me nose.

My passenger overheard someone on the comms say something about a selfie, so she just HAD to take one.

Tower view. Alot of good-looking planes all at once!
